Press Release:

Habitat for Humanity completes 25th Arxx home

Kansas City, MO – With its professional staff, volunteers and support from the local distributor, Progressive Building Products, Kaw Valley Habitat has constructed 25 homes with the Arxx Wallsystem. Arxx is an Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) system that ensures stronger, safer and more energy efficient walls. This is the third year that Kaw Valley Habitat has been using Arxx in its home construction. These “stay in place” expanded polystyrene forms are reinforced with steel bars and then filled with concrete.

“We had been researching ICFs for a couple of years prior to actually working with them. We like the fact that it is an energy efficient, storm and fire safe, and easy to maintain material,” explains Kelly Willoughby, executive director of Kaw Valley Habitat for Humanity. “When conducting this research, Arxx in particular was recommended for its ease of use and strong technical support.” The majority of the organization’s homes are now being built of concrete, with traditional exterior siding or finishes.

According to Conrad Hitchler, sales manager, Progressive Building Products, Arxx seems to be well suited to Habitat’s construction methods. “They have a very organized system for building, with staff members trained to use Arxx,” he said. “They in turn find it easy to teach the system to volunteers, who learn on the job.” He noted that one regular volunteer to Habitat has recently spoken to him about building his own house with Arxx forms. Progressive is the local distributor of Arxx for Habitat and Hitchler has worked with the organization on all 25 homes as well as on homes for the Sugar Creek Habitat for Humanity and Kansas City Habitat for Humanity.

“We build in urban core neighborhoods so the safety aspect is pretty important, said Willoughby. “Arxx homes are sturdier and more fire resistant.” Second only to safety is the need for the homes to operate as efficiently as possible for their new owners. Kaw Valley Habitat has been monitoring energy costs over the years. “For us, affordability is more than just the purchase price, but the ability to maintain it for life. We’ve found that these homes are in fact saving energy and their owners are uniformly loving their concrete homes,” added Willoughby. “We are convinced that using Arxx ICFs was the right decision.”
