" We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just put the pieces together a little bit differently. The technology is available, but we need to put it together with some smart economics. Green technology is just smart economics using what we have to save money and the environment. " Casey Timmermans , Homeowner

Unique energy-savings with Arxx

“So how does this work exactly?”The Arxx method is cutting-edge, and with proper training it can be fast and easy for a contractor to install. Arxx Insulating Concrete Forms are stay-in-place “blocks” that are reinforced with steel and then filled with concrete to construct high performance walls and foundations. Arxx walls are comprised of a double layer of expanded polystyrene wrapped around a reinforced concrete core. Unlike wood construction, an ICF wall is free of cavities and gaps. This feature significantly reduces drafts, which not only enhances energy efficiency, but also inhibits the proliferation of mold and enhances indoor air quality.

This home’s owner, Casey Timmermans, focused on utilizing the most efficient green building technologies in order to build a custom house that is incredibly cost effective to operate. In addition to choosing Arxx Insulated Concrete Walls, Casey also decided to use R-80 insulation in the home’s ceilings, and took considerable care choosing the home’s heating system. One of the system’s key features is its use of an air source heat pump. This device heats the water that is pumped through the pipes embedded in the radiant hydronic floors. Casey sums up his philosophy by stating: “We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just put the pieces together a little bit differently. The technology is available, but we need to put it together with some smart economics. Green technology is just smart economics using what we have to save money and the environment.”

Since this home is located on five acres and has been built in a wooded area, fire safety is of paramount importance. Since Arxx walls are filled with concrete, they provide stong resistance to fire, and carry a UL/ULC fire rating of up to four hours. In addition to the structure’s Arxx walls, Casey has also taken a number of unique protective measures. A flame retardant concrete tile roof was installed, plus a “fire buffer zone” was created by building a 2400-gallon cistern in an insulated shed within walking distance of the building.

While ICF technology may be a relatively new concept for some potential homebuyers, it is not new to the people at Arxx. The longest established company in the ICF industry, Arxx has been perfecting its building system and customer support infrastructure for more than a decade. In addition to providing a “proven product” and “unbeatable support”, Arxx has been approved by all of the major Building Codes across North America and insures its products with a 30-year limited warranty. Headquartered in Southeastern Ontario, Arxx has 12 Regional Sales Offices across North America.
